As the weather starts to get warmer and the sun shines brighter, we are excited to welcome tulips to Sunnyslope Floral! Who else is ready for spring? After a long, different year, tulips are bringing joy and hope with their bright, beautiful colors. Check out these fun facts that you might not have known about these lovely, spring flowers.

1. Tulips did not originate in the Netherlands!

While the Netherlands is the world's main producer, producing around 3 billion bulbs a year, it is not where tulips originated. Tulips are native to Central Asia, were brought to Turkey, and then arrived to the Netherlands.

2. Tulips are edible!

Tulips were commonly eaten during WWII during the Dutch Famine as the petals of tulips can be used as an onion substitute. They are in the same lily family with asparagus, lilies, garlic, and onions. Surprisingly, they can also be used to make wine too! Just make sure you wash it well as you would with vegetables and fruits.

3. There are 3,000 varieties that are currently registered.

There are 14 different types of tulips that these 3,000 varieties are categorized into. The most popular types include Single tulips, Parrot tulips, Triumph tulips, double tulips, and Darwin Hybrid tulips.

4. If you cut tulips, they will continue to grow at least another inch in the vase.

They will also stretch, bend, and twist their necks towards the sun!

5. During the 17th century, a single tulip cost more than some houses!

The demand for tulips was so large in Holland in the 1600s that it drove the price of tulips to be higher than the average worker's income, and at its peak, costing more than homes.

6. Tulips symbolize perfect love and rebirth.

For many centuries, tulips have symbolized deep, perfect love. Plus, since they are one of the first flowers to bloom in the spring, they can symbolize rebirth.
