Here are some fun facts about roses:

1. The United State's National Flower is the Rose

In 1986, Ronald Reagan's Proclamation 5574 designated the rose as the United State's national floral emblem. He felt this was appropriate as all fifty states grow roses among many other factors he includes in the Proclamation.

2. Rose Fragrance is Used in Perfumes

Rose is a very popular scent! This floral scent is used in many perfumes due to it's beautiful aroma.

3. The World's Oldest Living Rose is Believed to Be 1,000 Years Old

1,000 years old?! That's crazy! This rose is located on the wall of Cathedral of Hildesheim in Germany. Even though the Cathedral was destroyed in WWII, the roots of the rose plant survived and has grown again up the rebuilt walls. Roses have been around for centuries as they are one of the oldest flowers.

4. The Most Expensive Rose Variety is Called 'Juliet'

Arguably one of the most well known romantic stories is 'Romeo and Juliet' by Shakespeare. No wonder the breeder, David Austin, named this variety after Juliet as the ultimate symbol and representation of love! It cost $3 billion to breed this rose over 15 years.

5. There are Many Species of Roses that Grow Fruit!

The fruit of a rose is similar to the looks of a berry and is called a rose hip. The rose hip holds the seeds of the rose and can be used to make medicine as it contains a lot of Vitamin C. However, once the rose hip is dried and has been processed, it can destroy most of the Vitamin C that was in the fresh rose hip. Some people will even use it to make jams and jellies!
